Separately, Statesman reports that Prasant Rout of Erasama, who had joined Maoist ranks in Jharkhand surrendered to the police in Jagatsinghpur on May 19. This is the first instance of a Maoist surrender in a coastal Orissa district. Police sources said that the Maoist sympathisers in areas such as Balikuda and Erasama have been used as informers, translators and at times for the purpose of distributing leaflets and other such literature by the Maoists. Police has a list of 40 to 50 young girls and boys who are suspected to be Maoist sympathisers in the area.
