The newly constructed Padia block office building was blown up by the cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) in Kalimela Police Station area of Malkangiri District on September 7, reports The Hindu. A group of around 50 armed Maoists took part in this operation. They reached the block office and forced the single unarmed watchman guarding the place to vacate the building at gun point. Then they planted landmines inside the building and blasted it. After blowing up the building, the Maoists raised anti-Government slogans and then escaped into the nearby forest. There have been several incidents in the past in Malkangiri District where Maoists had targeted panchayat (village level local self Government institution) office buildings. But this time they targeted a block headquarters.
