The trouble started when AL activists captured an ICS leader, an accused in arson and vandalism case filed in connection with the April 11, 2003, shutdown at Kaliganj Bazar. Hearing the news, ICS cadres carried out an attack on the ruling party men forcing them to retreat. The ICS cadres set fire to the Kaliganj Bazaar, causing burn injuries to at least 30 people and burning down 15 shops.
